RAWALPINDI: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has registered a first information report (FIR) against 14 prisoners who escaped from a police transport van during transfer to Adiala jail in Rawalpindi. The incident occurred on Monday when the prisoners allegedly threw red chilli powder at police escorts inside the vehicle to facilitate their escape.
The FIR, filed within the jurisdiction of Sihala police station in Islamabad, also names five police officials for investigation. Authorities allege the officers neglected their duties, enabling the mass escape.
Charges under Pakistan Penal Code sections include: Section 224 (resistance to lawful apprehension), Section 353 (assault on public servant), Section 186 (obstructing public functions), Section 34 (joint participation), and Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy). Police personnel face charges under Section 223 (negligent escape from custody) and relevant clauses of the Police Ordinance 2002.
According to police reports, driver Imtiaz Ahmed stated that commotion erupted inside the van near Chakian stop around 4:45pm. When officers attempted to regain control by unlocking the vehicle, prisoners sprayed chilli powder, causing temporary blindness and allowing their escape. Police subsequently fired warning shots during pursuit attempts.
Rescue 15 emergency services were alerted following reports of the escaped prisoners. Four of the 14 fugitives were apprehended at the scene by Sihala police contingent.
This incident follows earlier security breaches, including an under-trial prisoner escape from Benazir Bhutto Hospital in February and over 200 inmates escaping from District Prison Malir in Karachi—the latter described as one of Pakistan’s largest jailbreaks by Sindh officials.
