The 2026-27 European club football season is set to commence following the 2026 World Cup, with the UEFA Super Cup serving as the continent’s inaugural trophy of the campaign. All details have been finalized for the high-stakes matchup between the two continental champions, including the kickoff time, stadium location, and prize distribution.
The UEFA Super Cup is an annual single-leg contest featuring the reigning champions of Europe’s premier club competitions: the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. Since its inception in 1973, the fixture has spanned over five decades, with Champions League winners maintaining a historical advantage of 30-20 over their Europa League counterparts.
Paris Saint-Germain enters the match as the Champions League representatives following their victory over Arsenal, aiming to secure consecutive Super Cup titles. They will face Aston Villa, who secured their spot as Europa League champions after a dominant 3-0 win over SC Freiburg.
Match Schedule and Venue: PSG vs. Aston Villa
Confirmed by European football governing bodies, the 2026 UEFA Super Cup between PSG and Aston Villa is scheduled for Wednesday, August 12, at 3:00 p.m. ET. As domestic campaigns in Ligue 1 and the Premier League are yet to begin, this match serves as the official season opener for both clubs.
The match will be hosted at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria. Since its opening in March 2003, the stadium has hosted multiple group-stage matches during UEFA EURO 2008 and serves as the home ground for Austrian side FC Red Bull Salzburg.
UEFA Super Cup Financial Rewards
While PSG earned over €100 million during their Champions League campaign and Aston Villa collected approximately €21.5 million during their Europa League success, the Super Cup operates under a different financial model as a single-match event.
Following the established distribution format, both participating clubs will receive a base appearance fee of €4 million. The victorious team in Salzburg will also earn an additional €1 million winner’s bonus.
Appointment of the Match Official
Somali referee Omar Artan has been selected to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup between PSG and Aston Villa. Facilitated through a joint development partnership between UEFA and CAF, Artan will become the first African official to lead a crew in a UEFA Super Cup final.
Artan has been a significant figure in recent football news following entry-related challenges that prevented him from officiating at the 2026 World Cup in the United States. In recognition of his elite status, UEFA has appointed him to lead one of the most significant single-match finals in the European football calendar.
