At least 25 individuals, predominantly children and teenagers, died in a bus accident on Fogo Island in Cabo Verde, according to public‑radio outlet RCV on Sunday.
Several additional passengers were injured, some seriously, said Jose Canuto, head of civil protection for the city of Sao Filipe, to the press.
Such accidents are uncommon in the West African archipelago, whose roads are typically well maintained.
Canuto and other local officials reported that the bus, which held 32 passengers, left the roadway and fell into a deep ravine while returning to Sao Filipe after a field trip to the Cha das Caldeiras village within the Pico do Fogo volcanic crater.
Among the victims was the driver, who annually organized the trip to the site as a gift for the students he transported to school during the academic term.
Emergency responders labored through the night to free victims trapped in the wreckage, which settled in a rocky, remote valley difficult to access.
