SEOUL, South Korea — Fire officials reported Saturday that at least 38 people sustained minor injuries after portions of a plaster ceiling collapsed at a supermarket in South Korea’s Daegu city.
The Daegu Fire Department stated that 66 additional individuals evacuated the facility following the collapse, which was first reported at 10:16 a.m.
Nine of the injured were transported to hospitals for treatment. While officials acknowledged the casualty count could potentially rise, on-scene emergency personnel determined it was highly unlikely anyone had suffered serious injuries, according to fire department official Yoon Jong-mi.
Photographs from the scene depicted emergency rescuers searching through debris following the collapse on the second floor of the four-story building. The cause of the incident remained undetermined.
The office of South Korean President Lee Jae Myung announced that he instructed officials to make every effort to rescue those affected and ensure a thorough response to the collapse.
