41-year-old French tourist dies while hiking in Crete

A 41-year-old French tourist died on Sunday near Balos in the Chania region of Crete after collapsing while hiking through extreme heat and intense sunshine.

The women set out this afternoon in the Chania district of Crete accompanied by their partner. According to reports shared with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) by the Hellenic Fire Service Coordination Centre, the couple abandoned their vehicle in a parking facility at Falasarna and proceeded on foot toward Balos Beach along a steep and challenging trail.

Despite clear warning signs restricting entry to the area, the hikers opted for a lengthy trek known for its demanding terrain.

During their return journey—when they were roughly one kilometer from the car park—the 41-year-old female lost consciousness after suffering severe dehydration. Her companion retreated to the vehicle to secure water while simultaneously informing emergency services by calling 112.

A massive rescue operation was subsequently launched, mobilizing firefighters from the Kissamos Fire Station and a team from EMODE. The responders discovered the conscious but unconscious woman on the trail and provided immediate first aid, conducting cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics from the National Emergency Centre (EKAB) summoned to arrive.

Emergency medics continued efforts to revive her and transported the 41-year-old to a medical facility. Authorities confirmed that the woman passed away during the transportation process.

As noted by the Coordination Centre, the elevated temperatures and relentless sun create exceptionally hazardous conditions for hiking on extended, arduous routes.

The Fire Service emphasized that the physiological demands placed on the human body under such environmental pressures are substantial, urging both local residents and visitors to exercise particular caution and comply strictly with safety advisories.
