British Man Arrested in Colombia Case After Woman’s Body Found in Suitcase
A British national has been detained in Colombia following the discovery of a woman’s body concealed in a suitcase at a Bogotá apartment. Authorities allege Matthew Ashley Foster-Smith, 46, orchestrated the killing of 36-year-old Natalia Villalba during a confrontation at her residence in the Chicó district on 18 June, local officials stated.
Foster-Smith, a resident of Bournemouth, Dorset, reportedly contacted British tabloid *The Sun* the day prior to his arrest, asserting he was watching England’s World Cup match against Croatia in a Dublin bar at the time of the incident. “I was watching England versus Croatia on a big screen—it wasn’t me,” he claimed. He recounted wandering a shopping center, purchasing ice cream, and returning home afterward to watch subsequent games.
The Engilsh football team’s opening World Cup match occurred in Dallas, Texas on 17 June, officials confirmed.
*The Sun* reported Foster-Smith reached out again to the publication Friday before his apprehension. Sources indicated investigators traced his location via phone calls he made. Ecuadorian authorities detained him at Bogotá’s Ciudad de México Airport, with Dorset Police assisting in the operation via an Interpol red notice and Colombian arrest warrant obtained by prosecutors.
Carlos Fernando Galán, Mayor of Bogotá, condemned the crime, stating: “This painful case will not go unpunished.” Meanwhile, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office confirmed they are supporting Foster-Smith amid consultations with regional officials. Dorset Police declined further comment as of Sunday.
