A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Balochistan on Friday, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The PMD reported the earthquake’s epicenter was located 60 kilometers northeast of Kohlu, with the tremors felt in Zhob, Barkhan, and Rakhni areas. The quake occurred at 4:48 pm and was recorded at a depth of 17 km.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) noted a 5.2-magnitude earthquake north-northeast of Barkhan at a depth of 10 km.

This week’s tremor follows a 5.4-magnitude earthquake that jolted Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Islamabad on Monday, with the PMD recording it at 3:22 pm and a depth of 215 km from the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan. That quake affected cities including Peshawar, Islamabad, Lahore, and Rawalpindi.

Last month, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake in Jhelum’s Pind Dadan Khan tehsil caused one fatality and injuries to 11 people, damaging several homes, according to the area administration.

Pakistan lies on three major tectonic plates—the Arabian, Euro-Asian, and Indian—creating five seismic zones. The convergence of multiple fault lines makes frequent tectonic activity a recurring occurrence in the region.
