Capsey Makes Historic Wicketkeeping Debut for England in Series Opener

Capsey’s school days at Bede’s in Sussex overlapped with former England wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor, who coached there before transitioning into a professional role with the England men’s team. This connection provided young Capsey—a 12-year-old who witnessed England’s 2017 World Cup triumph at Lord’s—the opportunity to train under one of the sport’s most acclaimed keepers.

“Sarah brought an X-factor to keeping that was really inspiring,” Capsey reflects. “She’s been a guiding voice for the past four or five years, encouraging me to return to the gloves.”

This summer, Capsey intensified her preparatory training, integrating catching and grafting drills into her existing batting and bowling routines. Her gym work focused on leg and abductor strength—critical for the squats required behind the stumps.

“I’ve managed to avoid injuries so far—knock on wood—which is positive,” she notes, adding, “It feels great to reconnect with Sarah this year and update her on my progress.”

Though six years have passed since her last official appearance, Capsey showcased her skills in a pre-T20 World Cup warm-up against India. She secured a clean catch off Dani Gibson, executed a stumping off Linsey Smith, and denied a bye, describing the session as “awesome” with “one of the highlights being keeping up to Gibson.”

Training has further seen her standing up to stumps against spinner Issy Wong, honing her technique with pace bowlers. “The experience will be nerve-wracking, but more so about meeting expectations than anything else,” Capsey admits. “Representing England comes with responsibility, especially with ICC points at stake.”

While this debut offers a dynamic opportunity to challenge for positions, particularly in light of Jonny Bairstow’s recent struggles, Capsey emphasizes her dual readiness: “I’m not perfected, but I’ve grown up playing with the gloves. Plus, my batting already secures my spot in the squad—having this experience as well is a bonus.”
