TJ Rumfield launched a tie-breaking homer in the seventh inning, leading the Colorado Rockies to a 4-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in Denver on Tuesday night.
Adael Amador contributed a home run and a single for Colorado (53-86), while Jake McCarthy and Brett Sullivan each collected two hits, helping the Rockies overcome a franchise-worst 10-game home losing skid.
The contest was knotted at 2-2 in the seventh when Mickey Moniak reached base on a throwing error by second baseman Jackson Holliday. With one out later, Rumfield blasted a homer off Luis De Leon (0-1) to give Colorado the lead, marking his 14th of the season.
Jaden Hill (1-3) provided a scoreless inning of relief, and Jordan Romano secured his 14th save of the campaign.
Jackson Holliday homered among his three hits for Baltimore (69-70), ending the Orioles’ four-game winning streak. The franchise now trails Cleveland by 1 1/2 games for the final American League wild-card berth.
Colorado took an early lead with a two-out rally in the third inning against starter Kyle Bradish. Amador gave the Rockies a 1-0 advantage with his second homer of the season, and Zac Veen narrowly missed back-to-back round-trippers when his triple caromed off the top of the right-field wall.
McCarthy singled through the middle to drive in Veen.
Bradish surrendered two runs on six hits across five innings pitched.
Baltimore scratched back in the fourth inning. Carlos Narvaez started the rally with a single and advanced to third on Pete Alonso’s one-out hit. Gunnar Henderson hit a hard grounder to first, which Rumfield fielded cleanly to force the out at the bag before completing a rundown to retire Alonso and close the frame.
Narvaez crossed the plate before Alonso was tagged out at the bag.
The Orioles threatened in the fifth by loading the bases with two outs to force the removal of starter Gabriel Hughes. Brennan Bernardino entered the game and retired Henderson on a popfly to end the threat.
Hughes allowed one run on four hits over 4 2/3 innings of work.
Holliday evened the score in the seventh with a two-out solo shot to right field, his seventh of the season.
