Richard Childress Racing’s decision to pair Chandler Smith and Carson Brown in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series represents the culmination of a three-year strategic vision, according to team officials.
Danny Lawrence, RCR’s director of division operations, revealed that the recruitment of Brown began through an unexpected connection. “Mike [Dillon] called me one day and mentioned there was a talented young driver racing Late Models in his neighborhood,” Lawrence explained to Motorsport.com. “After meeting with Brown and his family, we recognized something special.”
The timing aligned when Smith sought to return to RCR after his stint with Joe Gibbs Racing. While Austin Hill’s advancement to replace Kyle Busch created a vacancy, Smith’s return to the organization provided the perfect opportunity to implement their long-term plan.
“RCR did reach out to me about driving the No. 2 car in 2024,” Smith acknowledged. “It was difficult because it felt like the right opportunity, but I was already committed to Toyota and JGR at that point.”
Lawrence emphasized that Brown’s selection wasn’t merely based on talent, but on character and professionalism. “What impressed us most was his maturity and work ethic. Driving independently across the country while managing his own schedule speaks volumes about his dedication.”
The organization’s driver development program, established with Tyler Reddick in 2019, continues to bear fruit. “We’ve seen tremendous success with drivers like Andy Street who started in our program and advanced to higher levels,” Lawrence noted.
During their initial visit to RCR’s facility in Welcome, North Carolina, Smith and Brown demonstrated immediate chemistry. “Chandler mentioned he’s always been the young gun, while I see him more as a veteran,” Brown said. “But that perspective helps because he understands where I am in my career.”
Both drivers emerged from the Super Late Model ranks, with Smith racing for Wilson Motorsports and Brown with Anthony Campi Racing – two powerhouse organizations in the series.
“Teammates are crucial at this level, particularly for restrictor plate racing,” Smith observed. “I learned the importance of teamwork from my experience with Layne Riggs last season. It makes all the difference when everyone is pulling in the same direction.”
Looking ahead, Smith views this as a championship-caliber opportunity, while Brown focuses on learning and development. “My goal is to come in, absorb everything, and execute my role effectively,” Brown said. “I have all the resources I need to succeed.”
