Reflecting on Katie Taylor’s remarkable career, promoter Eddie Hearn admits the Irish boxing sensation’s story is almost too extraordinary to believe.
This Saturday evening, Taylor is set to make her decisive entrance into the ring at Croke Park, where she will challenge Flora Pili with the opportunity to reclaim her status as the undisputed light-welterweight champion.
Despite entering professional boxing in 2016 with an impressive resume—including an Olympic gold medal, five world titles, and seven European amateur championships—there was no certainty that her amateur success would translate to professional recognition, particularly at a time when women’s boxing remained largely overlooked.
Following initial discussions with Taylor, her mother Bridget, and manager Brian Peters, Hearn’s enthusiasm for the project intensified considerably.
“I’ll admit, when I walked into that initial meeting, I was perhaps ninety percent convinced I wouldn’t pursue this opportunity,” the Matchroom chairman recalled.
“Her intensity and fervor were remarkable. The conviction in her voice, combined with her account of her Olympic campaign—advocating for women’s boxing’s inclusion in the London 2012 program—left me genuinely astounded. That’s precisely when we made the decision to feature her as a headliner in November.”
The choice to showcase Taylor following Ohara Davies’ victory over Andrea Scarpa that evening at Wembley Arena initially faced skepticism from his father, Barry.
“He expressed doubts, suggesting there was minimal audience interest in women’s boxing. However, after witnessing her professional debut, his reaction shifted dramatically to pure amazement.
“From that point onward, the trajectory has been nothing short of extraordinary,” Hearn observed.
