The Avalanches, the Melbourne-based electronic ‘plunderphonics’ group, have unveiled their new single, ‘Together’. This joyously nostalgic track features collaborations with Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza, and Prentiss, and is believed to be the initial offering from their forthcoming fourth album.
This release marks the band’s first new music since their 2020 album, ‘We Will Always Love You’. That record itself came four years after 2016’s ‘Wildflower’, which ended a 16-year hiatus for the group. ‘Together’ is an infectiously energetic song that explores the poignant warmth of memory, highlighted by Jessy Lanza’s evocative lyrics: “You only know the picture me, the one that smiles with hope / You could never picture me at home, crying over my telephone / I’ll never be the picture me, the me I love the most / Staring at a picture on my phone, staring at a memory that’s gone.”
The single is accompanied by a simple video featuring a floppy disk and an iPod moving forward against a sun that rises and sets with striking regularity.
