No. 7 Miami defeated Stanford 45‑6 in its Week 1 opener, with several offensive players delivering standout performances.
Sophomore wide receiver Malachi Toney hauled in 12 catches for 234 yards and three touchdowns, shattering Miami’s single‑game receiving‑yards record.
Additionally, Duke transfer Darian Mensah completed 27 of 30 passes for 401 yards and five touchdowns, posting the best debut numbers ever recorded by a Miami quarterback.
Mensah entered the season as a potential Heisman contender after leading the Blue Devils to 3,973 passing yards, 34 touchdowns, six interceptions and an ACC championship in 2023. Now at Miami’s helm, he pairs with Toney as a premier receiving target.
“It feels effortless,” Mensah said of his chemistry with Toney. “He knows how to get open, which makes my job easier.”
Following the Hurricanes’ College Football Playoff appearance last year, Mensah was tasked with replacing former starter Carson Beck. His performance now places him among the few Miami quarterbacks to exceed 400 yards and five touchdowns in a game.
Toney, a true freshman last season, amassed 109 receptions for 1,211 yards and ten touchdowns, leading the ACC in receptions, yards and scores.
With a 1‑0 overall and 1‑0 conference record, Miami opens its home slate against Florida A&M on Saturday, September 12.
