Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes has announced his departure, with a move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal on the horizon.
Having joined Liverpool in June 2024 after a comparable role at Bournemouth, Hughes’ departure was anticipated given that his contract runs until June 2027.
During the summer transfer window, he supervised roughly £200 million in spending, which included the acquisition of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint‑Germain.
“I will always follow and support the club with great affection, and I wish everyone involved nothing but success this season and beyond,” Hughes said in a statement issued by Liverpool.
At 47, Hughes joined Anfield following the exit of longtime manager Jürgen Klopp and played a key role in hiring his successor, Arne Slot, who guided Liverpool to a record 20th Premier League title in his debut season.
He also oversaw the club’s record £125 million capture of Alexander Isak last summer and the £116 million signing of Florian Wirtz.
However, Slot struggled to replicate that early success, and Liverpool ended the season fifth, leading to the Dutch coach’s exit and his replacement by Andoni Iraola—whom Hughes had previously worked with at Bournemouth.
Mike Gordon, president of Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owners, commented: “Richard joined us at the outset of a transitional phase, taking charge of our football operations, overseeing recruitment, and offering valuable support to the coaching staff.”
“The achievements we attained in these areas over this period reflect his contribution. That said, we respect Richard’s personal decisions and wish him and his family success in their next endeavor.”
Hughes’ anticipated move to Al-Hilal follows a summer transfer window in which the Saudi Pro League club invested nearly £180 million in Premier League talent.
The 21‑time Saudi champions secured Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli for £60 million and Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins for £51 million.
Al-Hilal, managed by former Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi, also added Netherlands midfielder Cyrenscio Summerville from West Ham for £60 million after the club’s relegation to the Championship.
