Symbolic Kyiv Talks Underscore Deep-Rooted Divisions Between Russia and Ukraine

The diplomatic meeting in Kyiv carried significant symbolic weight. The occasion marked the first time Donald Trump’s envoys set foot on Ukrainian soil since Russia’s full-scale invasion began.

Their journey required a train ride rather than air travel, as flying would have exposed them to the threat of Russian drones, weapons deployed at the command of the very leader they had met at the Kremlin just hours earlier.

Adding to the symbolism, Ukrainian President Zelensky welcomed Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner at Kyiv’s Saint Sophia Cathedral, a monument of Ukraine’s ancient heritage and a location situated just meters from the headquarters of the country’s security services, which Russian drones struck on Friday.

The underlying message from Zelensky was unmistakable.

Both delegations engaged in hours of discussions and were later joined by national security advisers from several European nations, including the UK’s Jonathan Powell.

Following the talks, all parties expressed optimism, characterizing the exchanges as substantive and expressing a desire to revive the previous framework of trilateral discussions involving the United States and European partners.
