- A collective of white-hat hackers has pledged to return 4,000 Bitcoin—valued at approximately $320 million—stolen from the Liquid Network, provided Blockstream addresses the vulnerability that facilitated the exploit.
- Bitcoin continues to demonstrate strong momentum, driven by nearly $1 billion in net ETF inflows over the past week and a favorable regulatory environment in the United States.
A group operating under a white-hat ethos recently exploited a security flaw on the Liquid Network, a Layer-2 (L2) Bitcoin sidechain, to abscond with 4,000 BTC, representing nearly $320 million at current market rates.
In what appears to be a demonstration of good faith, the responsible party has opened dialogue with Blockstream, the primary technology provider and founding member of the Liquid Federation. The group has committed to returning the stolen Bitcoin under specific conditions.
Ongoing Negotiations Between Blockstream and the Hacking Collective
Utilizing Bitcoin’s OP_RETURN function—a specialized instruction within the network’s scripting language that enables users to embed a small amount of custom data within a transaction—the hacking collective has demanded that Blockstream, at minimum, commit to resolving the bug that enabled the fund drainage. They have vowed to return the compromised assets once the company demonstrates it has patched every affected node.
Following confirmation of the attack on its Liquid Federation wallet, Blockstream announced it had already alerted cryptocurrency exchanges regarding the incident. This prompted the freezing of LBTC deposits and withdrawals to contain the situation.
The company has reassured the broader crypto community that other tokens operating on the Liquid Network—including Tether’s USDT, the Brazilian real-pegged DePix, and tokenized real-world assets (RWAs)—remain unaffected by the exploit. Additionally, the protocol has temporarily disabled bridge nodes and has entirely paused the Liquid sidechain to prevent new transactions.
Blockstream has issued an apology to affected Liquid wallet users, confirming that efforts are already underway to develop a solution restoring normal network functionality. The team has also verified it is communicating with the hackers through signed messages on-chain, ensuring their exchanges remain transparent and publicly verifiable.
Bitcoin Market Performance
Despite another significant hacking incident rattling the cryptocurrency community, Bitcoin has maintained its position within the $79,000 to $80,000 range. This resilience in the premier cryptocurrency is reinforced by approximately $986.7 million in total net inflows into spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) during the past week.
Furthermore, increased cooperation between the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) toward establishing clearer regulations for digital assets has provided additional reassurance regarding the sector’s future, even as a potential delay looms for the pending Digital Asset Market Clarity Act in the Senate.
