Dennis Hauger Secures 2026 Rookie of the Year Title amid Challenging Finish
Despite the setback caused by an opening-lap collision in the season finale, Dennis Hauger officially captured the 2026 IndyCar Rookie of the Year title, driving the #19 Dale Coyne Racing Honda. He narrowly edged out Mick Schumacher by 15 points to claim the top rookie honor.
The 23‑year‑old Norwegian posted eight top‑15 finishes throughout the campaign, highlighted by two top‑10 results—including a strong eighth place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. With five top‑10 starts across the 18‑race calendar, he included two successful Fast Six qualifying sessions; a standout performance saw him place third in his series debut at St. Petersburg. He also showcased consistent speed on short streets, leading laps at Phoenix and Milwaukee.
Reflecting on the conclusion of his rookie campaign following the final checkpoint, Hauger reflected on the emotional ride of the year.
“This season has definitely been a roller coaster for a rookie,” Hauger said. “Earning the Rookie of the Year title is truly special to me. It’s something that can only happen once, and getting it is remarkable. I am deeply grateful. My gratitude goes to Team Honda and everyone who supported me this year. Although the experience wasn’t perfect—specifically due to the retirement—but we ultimately stood atop the podium. I’m extremely happy and appreciative.”
Transitioning from karting to IndyCar presented its own demands, though Hauger credited those early victories. “The most valuable lesson I took away from this year is how to collaborate effectively within my team and how to refine my technical approach with the chassis, as well as understanding what I need for my future pursuits,” he noted.
Moreover, Hauger emphasized the critical role of unity within the squad. “Teamwork and group ethics are paramount, especially over such an extensive 18‑weekend season. Sustaining a positive environment and ensuring effective cooperation make all the difference between a mediocre year and a resounding one,” he added.
Looking ahead to 2027, Hauger confirms he is prepared to proceed, even if his exact move remains undetermined.
“While the future is unclear, I know I possess the capability to deliver excellence. During the 2026 season, I learned a vast amount about the sport. Returning for 2027 in St. Petersburg, with all my accumulated experience, would represent a significant leap forward. Having that opportunity would be exciting.”
