Leus du Plooy will miss the rest of the 2026 season and Middlesex’s first List A final since 1990 after the club failed to reclassify him as an overseas player under ECB regulations following his declaration to represent South Africa internationally.
The 31-year-old South African-born batsman, who has played for Middlesex as a local player through his Hungarian passport, had his contract extended through 2027. However, the club announced he will depart at the end of summer after seeking permission to play for South Africa, which triggered the need to register him as an overseas player for his final season.}
The club assumed they could retain du Plooy as a local player during the 2026 season, but ECB rules state that declaring for another country immediately classifies a player as overseas for the remainder of the current campaign. Middlesex discovered their oversight only after the Sunday, September 6 deadline to register overseas players had passed.
The club is now consulting with the ECB and Professional Cricketers’ Association regarding du Plooy’s status. He will not be available for Middlesex’s County Championship match against Durham, with Max Holden assuming the vice-captaincy duties. The team currently sit fourth in Division Two, 38 points adrift of the promotion spots.Despite du Plooy’s absence from the current squad, Middlesex remains in contention for their first white-ball trophy in 18 years, with a Metro Bank Cup final against Leicestershire scheduled at Trent Bridge on September 20.
Du Plooy missed Middlesex’s run to the final due to his commitments with the Manchester Super Giants in the Hundred. His exclusion from the final follows the club’s administrative error in handling his registration status under cricket regulations.
“Middlesex Cricket can confirm that captain Leus du Plooy will be unable to play for the club for the remainder of the 2026 season following clarification of his playing registration status under ECB regulations,” the club announced.
“Following a press article last week, the club confirmed Leus had declared his intention to pursue an opportunity to play international cricket for South Africa. The club has now been made aware that, under ECB regulations, a player who has declared an intention to play for another country is classified as an overseas player for domestic cricket purposes.”
“As a result, Leus is required to be registered as an overseas player in order to continue playing for Middlesex. The deadline for the registration of overseas players for the 2026 season was Sunday, 6 September, meaning that it is now not possible for the club to register Leus and select him for the remainder of the season.”
