The United States has enacted a ban on a range of Canadian imports, including alcohol, dairy products, and motor vehicles, effective September 29. The move comes in direct response to retaliatory tariffs imposed by Canada on American goods.
In a series of executive orders issued Tuesday, President Donald Trump declared that Canada is discriminating against U.S. commerce, justifying the sweeping restrictions. Earlier the same day, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged in a video address that the nation’s strategic pivot away from reliance on its largest trading partner “will come at a cost.”
While officials on both sides have expressed a desire to reach a negotiated settlement, no new talks have been scheduled since negotiations broke down in late August.
