Tung Chee‑hwa, who served as Hong Kong’s inaugural chief executive and guided the city through its 1997 handover to China, has passed away.
His office announced in an early‑Wednesday statement that he died on Tuesday at age 89, with family by his side.
Reports indicate that he passed away at Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital.
In addition to his role as chief executive, Tung served as a vice‑chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the nation’s leading political advisory body.
