The National Security Agency is adopting artificial intelligence technologies to handle the enormous volumes of data it gathers, enabling analysts to process tasks and detect anomalies more rapidly, a senior official stated Tuesday.
“We are currently exploring how AI can be employed to triage and manage significantly larger volumes of information,” David Imbordino, director of the agency’s cybersecurity directorate, told a panel of Five Eyes partners at the Billington Cybersecurity Summit in Washington, D.C.
“Volume has always been a challenge,” he noted, but AI promises to accelerate the identification of key insights. In the coming period, analysts will likely employ AI tools to examine varied data sources and evaluate them far more swiftly than current methods, which can require days or weeks, Imbordino added.
His comments underscore the growing reliance of U.S. cyber and intelligence agencies on AI, illustrating the pervasive role these systems will have in everyday operations within intelligence offices.
The NSA has also assumed a prominent role in the Trump administration’s AI policy initiatives, as increasingly sophisticated tools aim to assist defenders in discovering and remediating software vulnerabilities while also providing attackers with novel exploit pathways. Recently, NSA Deputy Director Tim Kosiba announced that the agency seeks access to a broad spectrum of models and is actively collaborating with leading AI companies.
The agency is assisting in the execution of a comprehensive June executive order that requires national security agencies to develop classified tests assessing when AI systems have acquired advanced hacking capabilities warranting heightened scrutiny. The directive also proposes a voluntary arrangement allowing developers to provide the government with qualifying models for up to 30 days prior to sharing them with other authorized partners.
