Carlos Alcaraz’s US Open title defence ended in a dramatic five-set quarter-final defeat to Ben Shelton, concluding at 03:34 local time — the latest finish in tournament history.
A packed crowd remained enthralled deep into the night as a modern classic unfolded across four hours and 28 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The encounter did not begin until approximately 11pm in New York, delayed from its scheduled start by the earlier Tuesday matches running over.
At its conclusion, eighth seed Shelton stood centre court to a roaring standing ovation, having sealed a 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 6-3 1-6 7-6 (10-7) victory that will be remembered for years to come.
It was the biggest and most significant win of the 23-year-old’s career.
Shelton had never beaten a top-three player in 17 previous attempts and had lost all three prior meetings with Alcaraz.
The result also guarantees an American men’s singles finalist for the first time in 23 years, as Shelton advances to face Frances Tiafoe in Friday’s semi-finals.
Alcaraz was returning from a lengthy wrist injury lay-off, but that context does not diminish the magnitude of Shelton’s phenomenal performance.
The seven-time major champion had exceeded expectations on his comeback after more than four months out, including a straight-sets dismissal of 20th seed Tommy Paul to reach the quarter-finals.
However, Alcaraz’s lack of match fitness ultimately caught up with him in a high-intensity battle defined by relentless rallies and extraordinary athleticism.
Even when it seemed Alcaraz had given everything, the two-time champion forced a deciding set and pushed the contest to a tense 10-point match tie-break, delivering a fitting climax to an unforgettable night.
