Democratic Senator John Fetterman made a surprise virtual appearance at the Republican midterm convention, delivering a pre-recorded video address endorsing Dave McCormick, a Republican candidate running for re-election in Pennsylvania.
Fetterman, who has increasingly diverged from his party’s mainstream since his election in 2022, used the video to pledge his rejection of “extremes and socialism,” echoing a common Republican critique of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.
In the video, recorded outside the Mon Valley Works steel processing plant in Pittsburgh, Fetterman referred to McCormick as a “great friend” and pledged to collaborate with him and former President Donald Trump to defend the American steel industry.
“Yes, I’m a Democrat. Why am I here talking to you today? Because, well, I’m a commonsense Democrat. I’m always going to stand with America,” Fetterman stated in the video message. “I’m always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life. Dave McCormick is the kind of senator who gets the job done, and he’s going to fight for Pennsylvania.”
Convention attendees, including Tracy Smith from Maryland and Eric Torrison of Arizona, expressed enthusiasm regarding Fetterman’s appearance. Smith described the crossover support as “awesome,” noting that Fetterman demonstrates a willingness to work across the aisle and find middle ground. Torrison, who previously opposed Fetterman’s election, remarked that the senator has remained true to his core beliefs rather than shifting to the left, calling him the “only sensible Democrat” from a conservative perspective.
Fetterman’s recent political stance has drawn significant attention, particularly amid reports from current and former staff regarding his avoidance of public events and erratic behavior. In recent days, the senator has actively worked to defend himself following the emergence of a social media account on X purporting to be run by former staffers.
