Santner Declines BBL Offer to Prioritize New Zealand Captaincy and Test Cricket

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has turned down a lucrative offer from the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League (BBL), choosing instead to focus on Test cricket and his leadership role with the national team.

The Strikers, who recently acquired Ben Stokes, reportedly approached Santner with a two-year contract. Although Santner conceded that the offer was good, the lure of playing Test cricket against India and Australia, along with his desire to retain the limited-overs captaincy, swayed his decision.

“When you look ahead to the summer we’ve got, India here for white ball and Tests and Australia away — there’s not many bigger than that — it’s quite an exciting time,” Santner told the New Zealand Herald. “I’d like to still be part of that.”

Santner has served as New Zealand’s ODI and T20I captain since late 2024, guiding the team to the finals of the Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup. He explained that giving up the captaincy was a non-starter, and while casual contract options were discussed, they did not feel right.

“I don’t want to give up captaincy,” Santner said. “If that was part of the deal, it was a no brainer for me. There were chats that it could have worked. But for me, sitting without a central contract and trying to captain, I don’t know if that would sit right at this stage.”

As part of New Zealand Cricket’s (NZC) central contract terms, players must remain available for the Super Smash in January, a period that currently overlaps with both the BBL and the SA20. NZC has taken a pragmatic stance in the evolving global cricket landscape, offering casual agreements to several players since they cannot match the financial offerings of various T20 leagues. This dynamic is expected to change next year with the launch of the NZ20 league, which will replace the Super Smash.
