October NY world sugar #11 (SBV26) rose 0.19 points, up 1.05%, while October London ICE white sugar #5 (SWV26) gained 8.00 points, up 1.54%.
Prices surged after crude oil (CLV26) jumped about 3% to a 3.25‑month peak. Higher oil values boost ethanol margins, encouraging sugar mills to divert cane crushing toward biofuel production and tighten global sugar supplies.
Additional bullish momentum comes from a Thai Sugar Millers Corp forecast that the 2026/27 crop could shrink 17% year‑over‑year to 10 million metric tons, reflecting reduced output from the world’s second‑largest exporter.
India, the second‑largest producer, recently cut dealer stock limits from 400 MT to 200 MT (effective Sep 15–Nov 20) to curb hoarding and increase domestic availability, potentially lowering import demand.
Market positioning remains strong, with funds extending their net‑long stance in NY sugar to 132,496 contracts— the highest level in three years according to the latest Commitment of Traders report.
Analyst outlooks point to a tightening balance sheet. The International Sugar Organization expects a 2026/27 global deficit of 200 000 MT, while private forecasters such as Green Pool, Covrig Analytics and StoneX have widened deficit estimates to 3.2 MMT, 300 000 MT and 1.7 MMT respectively, citing reduced EU output, Brazil’s shift to ethanol, and adverse weather including a developing El Niño.
EU sugar production is projected to fall 19% year‑over‑year to 13.4 MMT for 2026/27, and Brazil’s center‑south June sugar crush dropped 26% year‑over‑year to 3.903 MMT. Monsoon shortfalls in India have also curbed domestic rainfall, adding further pressure on supplies.
Overall, the confluence of higher crude prices, strong fund positioning and downward revisions to production forecasts across key supplying regions is supporting sugar prices and reinforcing expectations of a tighter global market in the 2026/27 season.
