Switzerland’s federal intelligence service has published a 200-page dossier on Josef Mengele, the Nazi physician branded the “Angel of Death” for carrying out lethal medical experiments on prisoners at Auschwitz.
During World War II, Mengele worked at Auschwitz in Nazi-occupied Poland, where approximately 1.1 million people were killed, including about one million Jews.
He became notorious for conducting brutal and dehumanizing medical experiments on inmates, including children, under the pretext of scientific research.
After the war, Mengele obtained a Red Cross travel document under a false identity and escaped Europe. He spent years in hiding in Latin America while international authorities sought to prosecute him. He died in 1979 when he drowned while swimming off the coast of Brazil.
According to the German news agency dpa, the released records include police material suggesting that Mengele may have returned to Switzerland after fleeing Germany or intended to enter the country under an assumed identity.
Historians seeking to determine whether Swiss authorities were aware of Mengele’s presence in the country while he was evading prosecution for war crimes have long sought access to the files.
