Sussex captain Tom Haines struck his fifth half-century of the season as the contest at Hove ground to a draw.
The 33-year-old will again be left wondering where his century is, having reached 63 with relative ease before edging a long hop from Rahul Chahar to mid-wicket.
Sussex ended the match at 167-3 in their second innings, commanding a lead of 240, when the sides shook hands at 16:20 BST — shortly after Ollie Pope delivered only his second over in first-class cricket.
In the end, the loss of play on the opening day to rain proved the decisive factor.
A result would have required Surrey to overtake Sussex’s first-innings total of 393 and seize early wickets to apply pressure. On a slow, true surface, neither scenario materialised.
The draw moves Surrey further out of the relegation mire, though they still require additional points to fully secure their status. They have opened up a gap above second-bottom Leicestershire, who also face a potential points deduction for preparing a substandard pitch in their game against Glamorgan last month.
Sussex remain fourth and, while within reach of the three title contenders, a more attainable goal is to reproduce last season’s fourth-place finish — a notable feat given the 12-point penalty for financial irregularities they carried at the start of the campaign.
They also retain a say in the title race, hosting Nottinghamshire at Hove next week in the penultimate round of matches.
When Sussex resumed with a lead of 73, George Thomas fell quickly, trapped in front by Matt Fisher. From that point, leg-spinner Chahar and Indian paceman Mahipal Lomror shared the workload, delivering 42 overs between them.
However, with the pitch offering only modest turn, it took 21 overs to claim a breakthrough. By then, Haines and Charlie Tear had put on 90 for the second wicket before Tear was given out lbw to a full-length delivery from Lomror that the batsman believed was drifting down the leg side.
Haines, averaging a modest 28.87 this season, was unfazed by the twin spin threat and was left aggrieved when Chahar’s full toss was comfortably taken by Rory Burns diving to his left rather than being driven over the rope.
Oli Carter and James Coles added 36 for the fourth wicket before the match was comfortably settled.
Earlier, Surrey’s last three wickets contributed just 27 runs as they were bowled out for 321, trailing by 73.
Adam Thomas and Fisher pushed their eighth-wicket partnership to 47 before Thomas drove left-arm spinner Coles’ fifth ball low to extra cover.
Ari Karvelas had Chahar caught low down by wicketkeeper John Simpson for a duck, while Fisher was caught at mid-on attempting to lift Jaydev Unadkat over the top.
