Razaullah Embraces the Moment With Unbridled Enjoyment

The smile on his face while batting perfectly reflected the emotion he felt. “I enjoyed the standing ovation,” Razaullah grinned later at the press conference. “I enjoy life, and I was savoring the moment.”

This innings drew lighthearted comparisons to the century he once scored as an opener in first-class cricket. After scoring an unbeaten 58 in the first innings for Peshawar, he requested to bat higher. Promoted to opener, he reached three figures.

However, this represented an entirely different challenge. He faced a bowling attack that had dismantled Pakistan’s specialist batters across five consecutive innings in a foreign country. Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, and Josh Tongue all bombarded him with short deliveries, the very type that troubled Babar Azam and much of his team throughout the tour. Yet, Razaullah stood his ground.

“I was selective about which balls to slog, but they all seemed within reach,” he said nonchalantly. “I wanted to hit them as deep as possible. I wasn’t intimidated by pace. I wanted to punish Archer’s deliveries that landed on a good length. When you play for your country, there is nothing to fear. I was just having a good time.”

The sheer velocity of the bat and the thunderous sound of contact were a sight to behold. Although there were some mistimed plays and misses—which is to be expected from such a high-risk innings—very few shots failed to connect. The impact was so fierce that he shattered two bats, and once he made contact, the ball sailed over the boundary regularly. Razaullah effectively took the field out of the equation; though England had several fielders positioned for his slogs, on nine occasions they were merely spectators as the ball cleared the ropes.

“My favorite delivery to face is the short ball. I simply believed in myself. I thought if I played 50 balls, I would get a positive result, and thankfully, that is exactly what happened.”
