ALS Research Funding Renewal Faces Critical Deadline as Advocate Urges Public Support

Tanea ‘Rebel’ Brooks is urgently appealing for public support to secure vital funding for ALS research, which is currently in jeopardy as key legislation nears expiration. The advocate, who is living with terminal ALS, recently reunited with wrestler Britt Baker during the ‘Rebel Heart’ episode of AEW Dynamite this week.

Following the event, Brooks shared a video emphasizing the precarious state of the ACT for ALS, a federal law that funds critical ALS research and expanded access to investigational treatments. The bill is set to expire on September 30, leaving researchers and patients in limbo as Congress grapples with legislative delays. While both the House and Senate passed reauthorization bills this summer, differing provisions and a shifted Senate schedule have stalled progress, with lawmakers now considering folding the measure into a broader healthcare package for year-end approval.

“A lot of patients do not have time to spare. Some won’t even make it to the end of the year,” Brooks stated, underscoring the urgency for immediate action. Renewal of the bill would secure an additional $500 million in funding for ALS research and treatment access, a lifeline for individuals like Brooks and thousands more affected by the disease.

Her primary concern is that despite unanimous bipartisan support for the legislation, Congress could prolong the delay, further endangering lives. To aid the cause, Brooks is directing supporters to sign a petition that I AM ALS, the advocacy group leading the effort, intends to deliver to lawmakers this Monday.
