Recipients holding these tokens retain dollar exposure until they choose to convert to local currency, offering flexibility. However, this convenience hinges on recipients’ readiness to engage with crypto platforms or convert tokens elsewhere, which may not align with all users’ capabilities or needs.
The cost-effectiveness of stablecoin transfers varies significantly based on route and direction. Bank of Italy research on $200 U.S.DC transfers between Italy and Brazil revealed stark differences: Italy-to-Brazil transfers cost 2.7% via stablecoins compared to 2.2% through traditional services like Wise, while the reverse route favored stablecoins at 2.21% versus 4.68%-4.89% for Wise. These disparities underscore how blockchain movement of tokens doesn’t account for exchange-rate margins or service fees at the origin and destination.
Recipients bear dual costs: upfront exchange fees and reduced local currency payouts due to unfavorable rates. Speed also varies; blockchain confirmations may take seconds, but bank conversions or withdrawals can delay access for hours or days.
Stablecoins add flexibility by allowing partial conversions. A recipient receiving $200 could convert $120 to local currency while retaining $80 in dollars, accommodating split spending needs. This contrasts with services mandating full local conversion or requiring recipients to navigate unfamiliar systems. However, dollar holdings introduce exchange-rate risk, potential inflation erosion, and dependence on issuer reserves—issues absent in traditional bank accounts with deposit insurance.
Redemption access depends on issuer policies. Circle Mint, for instance, serves institutions directly, while retail users rely on exchanges. European holders may access EEA-specific redemption rules, but many recipients still face hurdles in converting tokens to cash or local currency. Social familiarity with service providers also impacts efficiency; personal relationships at service points or shared app knowledge reduce costs hidden in technical support exchanges.
The ultimate metric for remittance services isn’t speed or blockchain fees alone, but whether recipients can actually use the funds. Reducing a $200 monthly transfer’s total cost from 5% to 2% saves $72 annually, but this gain vanishes if recipients can’t access or spend the money. Payment providers must address friction outside the blockchain—from onboarding delays to wrong-network transfers—to ensure stablecoins fulfill their promise of accessible, low-cost international money movement.
