I structure my portfolio with a clear objective: generating income while pursuing capital appreciation. To achieve this, I focus on dividend-paying companies, following a disciplined approach inspired by long-term investors like Warren Buffett, who remains comfortable holding cash until attractive opportunities arise.
Diversification is central to my strategy. Rather than aiming for an arbitrary number of holdings, I focus on spreading investments across a wide range of sectors and asset classes. My current portfolio includes approximately 34 direct investments, complemented by pooled investment products that further broaden exposure. These include Baron mutual funds for growth and small-cap exposure, closed-end funds focused on healthcare with option income overlays, convertible securities, and broadly diversified dividend portfolios, as well as exchange-traded funds with option income focuses and alternative dividend screening strategies. Together, these holdings encompass hundreds of stocks and convertible bonds across multiple industries, forming a diversified foundation that allows me to make selective individual stock investments with confidence.
My approach to stock selection prioritizes companies with impressive histories of dividend growth and yields that are historically high. I conduct thorough fundamental analysis on each candidate and only commit when I believe the underlying business is solid. Notable holdings include Realty Income, a real estate investment trust; PepsiCo, a consumer staples giant; Black Hills, a regulated utility; and Enbridge, a North American pipeline operator. I ensure geographic and sector balance, owning positions across real estate, consumer staples, energy, and utilities, among others. When I build a position, I commit a specific dollar amount and refrain from adding once the position is full. This caps downside risk while maintaining discipline. I also target entries when yields are historically attractive, such as increasing positions in quality companies during market downturns.
A key principle is recognizing personal limitations. I outsource complex or time-intensive strategies—such as option income execution or specialized sector exposure—to pooled funds, freeing me to focus on areas where I add value. If I cannot identify a compelling opportunity, I hold cash rather than forcing a purchase. Cash serves as a safe-haven reserve, providing flexibility in varying market conditions, though I remain aware of inflation’s erosive impact.
Ultimately, my portfolio is built on a diversified core that I maintain across sectors, investment approaches, and asset types. This structure supports concentrated, conviction-driven individual stock picks without exposing the overall portfolio to undue risk. The takeaway is clear: understand your capacity, outsource what lies beyond your expertise, and remain disciplined about deploying capital only when the odds are favorable.
