A passenger vessel carrying 240 people lost contact in the Java Sea on Sunday, prompting an urgent search by Indonesian rescue teams.
The Virgo Transport 8 was en route from Surabaya, East Java, to Banjarmasin on Borneo when it ceased transmitting, according to an Associated Press report citing Indonesia’s Banjarmasin Search and Rescue Office.
The vessel’s last known position placed it about 92 miles from a pier in Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan province.

Search‑and‑rescue teams launched an operation after receiving a report that the ship had experienced a communications failure during its voyage, the AP reported.
No deaths or injuries had been reported as of Sunday, and the cause of the loss of contact or any impact of weather conditions on the operation remained unclear.
