Sheffield Steelers Dominate Coventry Blaze 6‑1 in Season Opener

Sheffield Steelers opened their season with a commanding six‑goal performance, defeating the Coventry Blaze 6‑1 at the Utilita Arena.

Evan Jasper reflected, “It’s great to be back, and nice getting a win like that. It gets the confidence going for the Challenge Cup. When we play our system we’re a tough team to beat.”

The Steelers dominated the opening period, and the margin was more than just a win. Early on, a potential goal was overturned after a review when the net was found to be out of position; the puck had hit a misaligned post. Ivan Bjorkly‑Nordstrom opened the scoring at 13:54 with a finish on an Evan Jasper pass, and Olivier Archambault doubled the lead just 90 seconds later. Robert Dowd added a third goal with 1:33 remaining, cementing the home side’s control.

Jasper added, “This is the first week me, Dowd and Ivan have played together, so we’re trying to get the chemistry going. It’s great to see another young Brit coming up in the Motorpoint Elite League and we worked well together tonight.”

The second period saw Coventry struggle further. Mikko Juusola extended the deficit to four within 18 seconds of the period’s start, and Evan Jasper made it five just past the 28‑minute mark. A late power‑play opportunity for the Blaze failed to result in a goal.

David Clements lamented, “Not the start we necessarily wanted, it’s tough to digest. We were short of bodies and that played a part at times, and we gave Sheffield a little bit too much respect in their own building. You give a team like that too much time and space and they punish you.”

Leevi Teissala scored the lone goal of the third period, securing a convincing six‑goal victory for the Steelers.

Clements concluded, “I’m proud of the guys who played heavy minutes when we needed them tonight. Sheffield did a good job keeping us to the outside. We had a good third period, but in this league you need to have a short memory and be ready to go again.”
