Ugo Ugochukwu Secures the 2026 Formula 3 Championship at Madring

Ugo Ugochukwu was crowned the 2026 Formula 3 champion on Sunday, overcoming the odds after entering the Madring weekend as an underdog.

Campos Racing’s Ugochukwu and Trident’s Freddie Slater established themselves as the primary title challengers during the summer, driven by their consistency in feature races. Through the first seven rounds leading up to the summer break, Slater secured six podium finishes in feature races, whereas Ugochukwu achieved five; no other driver managed more than two top-three results throughout the season.

Leading Audi’s new Driver Development Programme, Slater possessed a strong opportunity to build a decisive lead over the low-profile Ugochukwu at the subsequent Monza round. However, following a second-place finish in the sprint, he steadily fell from pole position in the feature race and ultimately retired due to a mechanical failure.

Consequently, the 18-year-old British driver arrived at the final round in Madring with a slim 15-point advantage over the 19-year-old American competitor. Unusually, the round consisted of three races to compensate for the cancelled Bahrain event caused by the Iran war.

Slater’s struggles continued as he qualified a dismal 17th and eighth, sealing his fate, while Ugochukwu secured fourth and second across the two qualifying sessions.

Ugochukwu finished eighth in the sprint and fourth in the opening feature race, while Slater failed to score points, meaning the title would be decided by Sunday’s results.

The Campos driver delivered a composed performance, maintaining second place without needing to aggressively challenge Tuukka Taponen for the victory or defend his position.

His Trident rival lost ground to Yevan David at the start but reclaimed eighth position by passing the Sri Lankan driver on the outside of Turn 1 during lap five. However, this was insufficient to overcome Ugochukwu for the championship.

“It felt like a much longer race than usual,” the American remarked. “Overtaking Tuukka was quite difficult due to the dirty air. I tried my best over a few laps, but I couldn’t get close enough. We knew that finishing second would clinch the title, so I simply had to bring the car home.”

“Every single kerb felt louder than usual, and I started hearing strange sounds, but I just had to keep it clean until the end. Once I crossed the finish line, I could finally relax. I’m just really relieved.”

Notably, the pair had previously competed for the Formula Regional European title during the winter, with Ugochukwu emerging victorious once again.

This triumph represents a poignant moment of redemption for Ugochukwu, who departed the McLaren junior programme at the end of last year after finishing a disappointing 16th in his inaugural F3 season.

“I don’t really know what to feel,” he stated. “It feels fantastic. The dedication we showed throughout the entire season has finally paid off. It has been an incredible campaign, and I just want to thank my team, Campos. We worked exceptionally well together all year, and to end it like this is the perfect way. Securing the teams’ championship yesterday and the drivers’ title today is essentially a flawless season.”

“It’s incredibly special. We set our goals at the beginning of the year, and we have achieved them today. It has been a great experience,” he added.

“I believe this weekend was the most crucial one. We were exceptionally clinical, made zero mistakes throughout, and simply delivered when it mattered, picking up the necessary points. It’s the perfect way to conclude the season.”
