Western Officials Present at Ukrainian Rail Station Moments Before Russian Train Attack, Ukrzaliznytsia Reports

Ukrainian Railways reported that senior Western officials, such as former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former CIA Director David Petraeus, were present at a western Ukrainian railway station shortly before a Russian strike hit a train bound for Warsaw.

Just prior to the locomotive being struck at the Ukrainian‑Polish frontier, a diplomatic train was stationed at Yagodyn, according to a statement from Ukrzaliznytsia.

Among those aboard were security advisers from various EU countries and former European leaders, including Boris Johnson. Simultaneously, former CIA Director David Petraeus was on a separate train that was at Yagodyn station at the exact moment of the attack.

Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski commented on social media that “Putin escalates,” while Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency meeting later that afternoon. Western officials traveling to Kyiv depend on the Poland‑Ukraine rail corridor, given that Ukrainian airspace remains closed.

Ukrainian Railways confirmed that passengers were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported, an announcement made on Sunday.

Polish rail operator PKP stated that it assumed control of the train from the Ukrainian side after a delay exceeding six hours, and the service proceeded toward Warsaw.

Poland’s Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz added that a drone struck western Ukraine about one kilometre (0.6 miles) from the Polish border, with another impact recorded five kilometres away. He noted that Polish F‑16 fighters and a reconnaissance aircraft monitored the incident, confirming that Polish airspace was not breached.
