The United States strongly condemns Hezbollah’s reckless attempts to overthrow Lebanon’s democratically elected government, Senator Marco Rubio said on Sunday.
The militant group has ignored repeated appeals from Lebanon’s legitimate government to cease hostilities and honor a ceasefire.
Instead, Hezbollah continues to fire on Israeli positions and to move fighters and weapons into southern Lebanon.
Rubio described these actions as part of a deliberate campaign to destabilize the country and preserve the group’s power at the expense of the Lebanese people’s future.
He noted that the Lebanese government is working to rebuild the nation with full U.S. backing, while Hezbollah strives to drag Lebanon back into chaos and destruction.
“Hezbollah’s threats of violence and attempts to overthrow the government will not succeed. The era of a terrorist group holding an entire nation hostage is ending,” Rubio asserted.
Rubio’s remarks coincided with “Resistance and Liberation Day,” which marks the Israeli Defense Forces’ withdrawal from southern Lebanon on May 25, 2000.
During his address, the group’s leader maintained that Hezbollah would not disarm and highlighted the success of its first-person‑view drone attacks on Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon.
