EU Nations Intensify Arctic Engagement as Region Emerges as Key Geopolitical Frontier

Europe is racing to secure strategic and economic opportunities in the Arctic.

European Union member states have agreed to boost investment in the Arctic, capitalising on emerging security and economic opportunities.

The summit, attended by the leaders of Finland, Denmark, Estonia, France, Greece, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Sweden, centred on the competition for influence in the Arctic as melting ice reveals new prospects. Participants identified Russia as the foremost security threat, while also acknowledging the strategic ambitions of China and the United States.

The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the region has become a geopolitical hotspot.

Although Germany is not an Arctic nation, Merz emphasised that his attendance underscores the region’s significance for European security and urged an end to years of neglect.

He added, ‘The era of high‑latitude attention has ended.’

Russia, Canada, Iceland, Norway and the United States, together with EU members Finland, Sweden and Denmark, are recognised as Arctic states.

Climate warming is opening the Arctic to shipping, fishing, drilling and mining, and China has openly expressed its interest in the resource‑rich region.

The competition has also heightened tensions among NATO allies. Greenland, though outside the EU and administered by Denmark, has become a flashpoint between the EU and the United States, with former President Trump asserting that Denmark cannot safeguard the island from Russian and Chinese influence.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen noted that ‘everyone has recognised the substantial pressure on Greenland.’

Last week, the EU signed a declaration with Greenland, pledging a stronger partnership and allocating a €200 million ($232 million) investment package to ease concerns triggered by repeated threats from Trump to annex the autonomous territory.
