The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that a member of the UK armed forces was killed in a road traffic incident in Ukraine over the weekend. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, is not believed to have been the result of hostile action.
The family of the deceased has been informed and has requested privacy as they mourn their loss. An MoD spokesperson expressed deep sympathy, stating, “Our thoughts and our sympathies are with the individual’s loved ones at this difficult time.”
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting shared a tribute on X, writing, “This is very sad news for the family and for those grieving with them in our Armed Forces. My deepest condolences go to them all.”
The UK maintains a small contingent of military personnel in Ukraine, where they provide security for diplomatic missions and support the country’s armed forces in their defense against Russian aggression. This latest incident follows the death of British paratrooper George Hooley, 28, who was tragically killed in Ukraine in December while observing Ukrainian forces during a defensive capability test.
As the conflict enters its fifth year, Russian strikes continue to target Ukrainian infrastructure. On Sunday, a drone attack struck a train at the Yahodyn station near the Polish border, shortly after a train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had departed ahead of schedule. Johnson was returning from a major security conference in Kyiv alongside former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt and other European security officials.
Ukraine’s national railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, stated on Telegram that it was “quite possible” the drone had been specifically targeted at the train carrying Johnson and other dignitaries.
