An AI “kill switch” has been proposed by an Anthropic co-founder as a potential safeguard to shut down advanced artificial intelligence systems if they pose an existential threat.
Jack Clark, a co-founder of the prominent AI safety startup, noted that while major research laboratories already possess internal mechanisms to “pull the plug” on their models, legislative bodies may ultimately need to mandate such safety controls.
Despite these warnings, the UK government has formally rejected the notion of establishing a statutory “kill switch” to regulate hazardous AI models. The proposal, which was advanced by members of the House of Lords and the House of Commons to create an emergency shutdown mechanism, was dismissed by the Cabinet Office.
A government spokesperson explained that simply blocking access to AI models within the UK borders would not halt their development or prevent potential misuse on a global scale.
Across the Atlantic, former US President Donald Trump has publicly dismissed fears of AI taking over the world, characterizing the notion of artificial intelligence “destroying humanity” as a “HOAX” on his social media platform, Truth Social.
In subsequent posts, Trump attributed these alarmist narratives to political opponents, comparing the discourse around AI risks to what he terms the “Global Warming Scam” advocated by the political left.
Despite his skepticism regarding AI dangers, the former president has consistently highlighted the economic and strategic advantages of the technology, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring that the United States prevails in the global “AI race.”
