Michael Holding Advocates for Humane Treatment of Imran Khan Amid Detention

Legendary West Indian fast bowler Michael Holding has voiced profound concern over the welfare of former Pakistan captain Imran Khan. Khan has been detained in Pakistani custody since August 5, 2023, while confronting multiple legal proceedings. Holding has joined a rising tide of international cricket figures demanding that Khan be afforded basic human treatment and adequate conditions during his imprisonment.

The former Pakistan captain’s circumstances have attracted considerable international attention. Khan’s family has voiced serious alarm regarding his access to reading materials and the sufficiency of his medical care while in custody. In February 2026, Pakistan’s Supreme Court mandated that authorities form a medical board to assess Khan’s eyes after reports emerged of vision loss in one eye. The court also instructed that he be permitted contact with his children.

Twenty-one international cricket captains, including Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, penned a letter to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, urging the authorities to guarantee basic amenities for Khan.

Personal Connection Influences Holding’s Position

Holding’s personal history with Khan has significantly influenced his position. The former West Indian bowler reminisced about his time alongside Khan during fundraising initiatives for a cancer hospital in London.

“I am fully supporting the captains who sent that letter. I am unsure of what impact it will have, but I stand firmly behind ensuring this man is treated like any other human being. You do not treat human beings that way—individuals convicted of murder are not subjected to such treatment. I fail to see why this man should be treated differently,” Holding stated, as reported by The Times of India.

“When Imran was traveling across London seeking donations for that cancer hospital, I accompanied him and did my utmost to support his efforts. Consequently, I know the man intimately and understand exactly what kind of person he is. It is deeply distressing to witness the current state of affairs and the situation unfolding for Imran Khan,” Holding added.

The former West Indies bowler also posited that Khan’s immense global popularity could be a contributing factor to the treatment he has received. Holding emphasized that the former Pakistan captain remains one of the most recognizable figures on the planet.

“I am uncertain if jealousy is playing a role here, because Imran Khan. I cannot think of a Pakistani who is more widely recognized across the globe than Imran Khan. The manner in which this man is being treated is utterly ridiculous,” Holding remarked.

International Support for Khan

Khan’s detention has drawn international scrutiny extending well beyond the cricket community. Several prominent former cricketers, including Pat Cummins, Wasim Akram, Javed Miandad, and Brian Lara, have also spoken out in support of ensuring Khan receives humane treatment.
