Ed Sheeran has shared a detailed statement on Instagram clarifying that he did not personally decide to remove Macklemore from his ongoing US tour.
The American rapper, born Benjamin Haggerty, was removed from the lineup following his public statements regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict during two concerts in New Jersey. His remarks sparked backlash from several Jewish community organizations, prompting certain venues to urge tour promoters to exclude him from future dates.
In a lengthy social media post, Sheeran explained that he spent the week engaging in discussions with venue representatives in an effort to mediate the situation. Despite these efforts, he acknowledged that the final decision rested with the tour’s promoters, the Messina Touring Group, who ultimately chose to drop Macklemore from the billing.
“Macklemore’s removal from the tour was the promoter’s decision, not mine,” Sheeran wrote. “His contractual agreement was with the promoter, rather than with me directly.”
He further emphasized his commitment to his fans and colleagues within the music industry, stating, “I would never abandon the touring crew, support acts, or musicians who depend on these performances for their livelihood and income.”
Sheeran also used the opportunity to address his general approach to political discourse. “I am not indifferent,” he noted. “While I hold personal convictions about this tragic conflict, remaining silent publicly doesn’t reflect my level of concern or involvement.”
“Nor does it indicate a lack of advocacy on my part—I simply choose to engage differently.”
He expanded on his stance by explaining why he avoids using his platform for overt political messaging: “My audience spans diverse demographics, including many young children. Attendees come to experience music, not political commentary.”
While expressing respect for Macklemore’s right to voice his beliefs, Sheeran highlighted alternative forms of activism: “There is space for various methods in pursuit of the same goal—a peaceful resolution.”
“I prefer to utilize my influence to foster an environment of inclusivity and dialogue, not division. Amplifying one perspective alone rarely drives meaningful progress. Advocacy comes in many forms.”
