Great Britain Advances to Davis Cup Finals After Dominant Win Over Ecuador

Great Britain secured a spot in the Davis Cup Finals after Henry Patten and Neal Skupski clinched a decisive 3-0 lead against Ecuador in their qualifying tie.

Toby Samuel and Arthur Fery secured victories in their singles matches at the sold-out Copper Box Arena in London, giving Great Britain a strong start in the best-of-five tie.

On Sunday, Patten and Skupski advanced Britain to the ‘Final 8’ event in Bologna with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo.

This marks Great Britain’s first appearance in the knockout stage since 2023.

“Three years—it feels like a long time,” Captain Leon Smith said. “Doing it in three straight rubbers is excellent, and I’m thrilled the team now has something to anticipate by year’s end.”

Despite facing underdogs Ecuador, where both singles players were unranked in the top 200, questions arose about Smith’s ability to guide Britain back to the knockout stages with an inexperienced lineup.

Jack Draper had already ended his challenging season, while injuries sidelined Jan Choinski and Jacob Fearnley. A further setback occurred when British number two Cameron Norrie withdrew from the tie after experiencing arm pain during a practice session.

Despite losing the first set, Samuel, who had risen from outside the world’s top 250 to 95th in the rankings during a breakthrough season and recently claimed his first Grand Slam match at the US Open, rallied to defeat Andres Andrade 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in his Davis Cup debut.

Fery, making his second Davis Cup appearance, dominated Alvaro Guillen Meza with a 7-5, 6-0 victory as the British number one.

With world number one Patten and US Open champion Skupski available for Sunday’s doubles match, victory appeared within reach. Despite never having partnered on the ATP Tour, the duo executed seamlessly, defending their serve without conceding a single break point.

“We’re close friends off the court, which definitely helps, and we often train together on tour,” Patten explained. “Louis Cayer’s system at the LTA has made it straightforward for British players to collaborate—we intuitively understand each other’s movements and shot selections.”

During Britain’s 2023 quarterfinal loss to Novak Djokovic’s Serbia, both Norrie and Draper struggled in singles. Smith acknowledged that facing top seeds in the Final 8 poses significant challenges but remained optimistic: “You try to steal one singles match, then rely on doubles strength. There’s tremendous excitement—it unites the team once more.”
