Ferran Torres Leads PSG to 2-1 Victory Over Rival Marseille

Ferran Torres maintained his strong form for Paris Saint-Germain by opening the scoring in their 2-1 victory over Marseille in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

Torres, who scored the winning goal in Spain’s World Cup final, entered the game as a substitute for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia around the 60th minute and headed home a cross from Desire Doue to put PSG ahead in the 66th minute at the Velodrome.

The goal energized the match, as Marseille’s Angel Gomes netted a fine equalizer in the 72nd minute, but PSG captain Marquinhos restored the lead just three minutes later to secure the win.

Marquinhos connected with a cross from Nuno Mendes, his first attempt was saved by Marseille goalkeeper Jeffrey de Lange, but he followed up to score from the rebound.

Timothy Weah, a former PSG player now starring for the United States, received a second yellow card and was sent off, leaving Marseille to play the remainder with ten men.

Torres, who scored the decisive goal against Brest last week, has now netted seven goals in six matches across all competitions since transferring from Barcelona. He has started only three of those games.

Torres commented post-match, “We understood the significance of this game as one of the season’s most crucial. It was challenging, but we achieved the victory.” PSG moved up to sixth place, five points behind Monaco after five games.

“Now, we can focus on our national teams and take a break from club football.”

Torres, who scored the extra-time winner for Spain against Argentina in the World Cup final last July, is part of the national team squad for their first match since the tournament, against England in the UEFA Nations League next weekend.

Marseille, facing difficulties, have now lost four consecutive Ligue 1 matches and five in total across competitions. As a result, they are in the relegation zone as the league pauses for a three-week break.

Monaco continued their unbeaten run with a 2-1 win over Lens on Friday, leading Ligue 1 by two points ahead of Lyon and Paris FC.

Lyon defeated Rennes 4-0 on Saturday, and Paris FC secured a 2-1 victory over Strasbourg.

Lille failed to close the gap on Monaco, losing 2-1 to Nice on Sunday.

Mohamed Amoura scored the winning goal for Nice, while Ayase Ueda of Japan netted for Lille, marking his third goal in four appearances since joining from Feyenoord.

Cameron Archer, formerly of Aston Villa, scored for the third consecutive match, helping Auxerre, managed by Will Still, to a 2-1 win over Brest.
