Zaheer Khan has been appointed head coach of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the upcoming IPL 2027 season, marking a new chapter in his coaching career within the Indian Premier League.
The former India fast bowler previously contributed to Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants in various roles. His CSK appointment sees him step into a head‑coach position after years of involvement in franchise management and player development.
Mumbai Indians: Director of Cricket Operations
Zaheer Khan joined the Mumbai Indians management team in December 2018 as Director of Cricket Operations.
He collaborated closely with the franchise’s coaching and support staff, contributing to cricket operations, player development and strategic planning. His tenure overlapped with Mumbai Indians’ back‑to‑back IPL victories in 2019 and 2020.
Having played for Mumbai Indians during his career, his move to a management role represented a return to the franchise in a new capacity.
Global Head of Cricket Development
In 2022, Mumbai Indians reorganized their leadership and appointed Zaheer Khan as Global Head of Cricket Development.
The role broadened his scope beyond the IPL squad, focusing on talent scouting and player development across the organization’s cricket pathways.
He remained with Mumbai Indians until departing for his next IPL opportunity.
Lucknow Super Giants Mentor
Zaheer Khan joined Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as a mentor ahead of the IPL 2025 season, filling the vacancy left by Gautam Gambhir’s exit.
His duties at LSG involved working with players and the coaching staff, and he also assisted the bowling unit following Morne Morkel’s departure.
The former India pacer brought his expertise in bowling, squad building and franchise management to the LSG setup.
Zaheer Khan Takes Charge at CSK
Zaheer Khan’s move to Chennai Super Kings marks his first head‑coach assignment in the IPL. He will now oversee the team’s coaching structure and preparations for IPL 2027.
The appointment continues his progression through IPL management, having previously served as Director of Cricket Operations, Global Head of Cricket Development and mentor before assuming the CSK head‑coach role.
