An esteemed economist from the Chinese University of Hong Kong has issued an apology following a campus presentation in which he analyzed women “marrying for money,” leading students to accuse him of making gender-biased remarks.
The backlash occurred shortly after Terence Chong Tai-leung, an associate professor of economics, delivered a talk on personal investment strategies during the university’s bi-weekly assembly on Tuesday.
According to social media posts on Threads, slides from Chong’s presentation included one titled “Economics of Partner Choice” with the heading “The Cost-Benefit Analysis of Women Marrying for Money.”
The content sparked outrage among students, who condemned the academic for reducing women’s partner criteria to material gain, with critics denouncing the framing as gender-biased, objectifying, and unfair.
