Four Dead, Six Missing in Japan After Typhoon Dujuan Strikes

Typhoon Dujuan resulted in at least four fatalities and displaced 22 others across Japan, while thousands of homes near Tokyo lost power as the storm swept through the region, officials reported on Tuesday.

Search and rescue teams continue operations to locate six individuals who remain missing, with authorities warning that the death toll could further increase.

The tropical cyclone has moved westward and exited Japanese waters, enabling the lifting or downgrading of severe weather advisories overnight.

Earlier, Dujuan prompted the early closure of a major gaming convention in the nation’s capital, one of the globe’s largest.

Multiple regions experienced extensive flooding, submerging entire neighborhoods and crippling essential services, roads, and public transport across the devastated zones.

By Tuesday afternoon, over 45,000 residents in Chiba near Tokyo remained without electricity, and more than 460 structures sustained varying levels of structural damage.

Despite the system weakening as it tracked northward, Dujuan discharged record-breaking rainfall throughout the city, including a staggering 832 millimetres recorded over 48 hours on the island of Oshima—more than double the typical September total—according to reports from NHK.

Edogawa Ward in Tokyo also saw unprecedented precipitation, with rainfall reaching a standing record of 282.5 millimetres within 24 hours.

Climate scientists attribute the heightened intensity of such extreme rainfall events to anthropogenic warming, which increases atmospheric moisture capacity and fuels more severe weather patterns.
