What I Outsource
My primary outsourced tasks include home cleaning, grocery shopping, and tax preparation, though I have considered meal prep services. While I have not had favorable experiences with travel planners, I would consider one if recommended by a trusted friend.
Home cleaning – I have worked with numerous services over the years, and finding the right fit is essential. For instance, one cleaner unloaded the dishwasher without knowing where items belonged and made puzzling choices, such as placing knives pointy-side-up with spatulas. Another service unnerved me by walking around taking photographs after their first clean; while I could see the logic of documenting a homeowner’s preferences, the practice felt intrusive. Fortunately, I also had an exceptional experience with a solo professional whom I trusted enough to allow her to organize our closets.
Grocery shopping – I have used this service intermittently over the years, but have relied on it consistently for the past five. I appreciate the ability to casually build a grocery list in the app, while a knowledgeable shopper navigates the store to find the items. We also make great use of the prepared foods they source, such as pre-portioned sliced apples, mirepoix, and occasionally a rotisserie chicken.
Tax prep – Given my legal background, I understand that the Tax Code is extensive and complex. Consequently, I have long since decided to entrust this responsibility to a professional. I have only had two accountants. The first was a wonderful older gentleman recommended by a friend, but we parted ways after he nearly overlooked a significant first-time homebuyer tax credit.
