Harry Kane Considers Transition to NFL Kicking After Football Career

England’s captain and all-time leading goal scorer indicates a potential transition to American football.

England captain Harry Kane has revealed that he is contemplating a future career as an American football kicker, while also considering a potential late-stage move to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States.

The forward made these remarks during England’s UEFA Nations League training camp on Wednesday, hinting at a possible late-career stint in the National Football League (NFL).

The 33-year-old had previously shown interest in pursuing careers in both golf and American football. He is now giving the NFL more serious consideration, though he emphasized that any potential move to the United States remains several years away.

“That is something I will look into more seriously,” Kane stated. “It all depends on the trajectory of my career over the next five or six years. The NFL is a much more realistic prospect than golf, to be honest.”

He remains England’s all-time leading goal scorer in international football, having netted 85 goals in 121 appearances, 25 of which came from successful penalty conversions.

The Bayern Munich striker believes his extensive penalty-taking experience could provide a significant advantage as an NFL kicker, though he acknowledges that transitioning to a different sport would require rigorous preparation.

He explained, “Taking penalties involves very similar pressure and technique… In terms of training, I would be closer to that than any other sport.”

“However, with all elite sports, watching them on television makes them appear effortless. You think it is possible, but that is not always the reality.”

“If I were to pursue it, I would take it very seriously and dedicate perhaps six months to a year to practicing beforehand.”

Kane also suggested that a move to MLS could offer a way to combine both sports.

“Perhaps if I end up in the MLS or somewhere similar in the future, it might be possible to connect the two sports through their respective seasons,” he added.

Several football players have previously made the switch to American football. Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey, for instance, was a first-round MLS draft pick by Toronto FC in 2017 but never made an official first-team appearance. Jake Bates similarly played college football before becoming a kicker for the Detroit Lions.

Kane’s immediate future, however, remains firmly rooted in football, with negotiations for a new contract at Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich progressing and an announcement expected soon.

“We are in good talks,” Kane stated. “There are still some details we need to finalize. I am happy here, and I believe it will not be long before some sort of announcement is made.”
