Conor Benn’s recent defeat to Ryan Garcia has cast serious doubt over his prospects of ever capturing a world title. Four-division world champion Roy Jones Jr. has weighed in on Benn’s future, offering a blunt assessment of the British fighter’s championship chances.
Following two high-profile bouts at middleweight against Chris Eubank Jr. in 2025, Benn sought to make a splash at welterweight, entering the year as the WBC mandatory challenger at 147 pounds despite not having fought at the division since 2022. After securing a decision victory over Regis Prograis in a 150-pound catchweight bout in April, Benn faced WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia this month, suffering a stoppage defeat inside just two rounds.
Speaking to Parimatch following the loss, Jones Jr. stated flatly that Benn will never become a world champion. However, the boxing legend maintained that Benn is still in a highly lucrative position within the sport.
“He’s not gonna be a world champion, no. But he’s gonna make a lot of money for what he’s doing. A lot of guys will wish they had that same fate. He’s fortunate enough to have a situation where he can fight two more top-level fights.”
Jones Jr. subsequently advised Benn to capitalize on his remaining market value by pursuing a highly anticipated super-middleweight trilogy match against Chris Eubank Jr., followed by one final bout before retirement.
“If I were him, I would just come back and run the Chris Eubank trilogy, for one. Then I’d get one more fight, and I’d be through with it. For him, make the money and be gone. That’s the best thing.”
As for Eubank, he has remained inactive since his narrow loss to Benn last November. He has recently been linked to potential matchups with Kell Brook and Michael Zerafa, as well as a possible move to Benn’s former promoter, Eddie Hearn.
