Law enforcement officials in Mississippi have revealed that 29-year-old Tasia Fortune was likely already deceased before her body was deliberately staged to appear as if she had been hanged, according to recent court testimony.
A detective testified in court on Friday, stating that the victim’s death was believed to be the result of a drug-related dispute. Fortune’s body was discovered hanging from a tree near an abandoned home in Jackson in August, a finding that sparked widespread fear in the predominantly Black city given the region’s deep history of racial violence and lynchings.
Following weeks of intense community speculation and demands for answers, police announced multiple arrests in connection with the case. Jarques Ratliff, 51, was arrested and pleaded not guilty, remaining in custody without bond, while a second individual, 25-year-old Earnest Lloyd Jr., was taken into custody this week. Authorities are currently seeking a third suspect.
The medical examiner confirmed earlier this month that Fortune died of a homicide, and murder charges have been formally filed. Officials have not yet publicly detailed the exact cause of death or the specific reasons why they believe the hanging was staged.
Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney stated that the department’s official language remains consistent, emphasizing that Fortune was found in a hanging position and that no contradictory information has been released.
